About this Collection
ASPIRA, Inc. of New Jersey, founded in 1968 and based at 390 Broad Street in Newark, is a chapter of the national ASPIRA Association, which was created to develop the “educational and leadership capacity of Hispanic youth.” Programs sponsored by ASPIRA, Inc. of New Jersey include the ASPIRA Parents for Excellence (APEX) Program, youth leadership development (ASPIRA Clubs), guidance counseling, after-school enrichment programs and activities such as an acting club and a boxing club, HIV-AIDS prevention, and delinquency prevention programs. ASPIRA, Inc. also sponsors a music studio, a television studio, and community technology centers.
The ASPIRA Inc. of New Jersey Records documents the administrative functions of ASPIRA and projects including APEX, GATEWAY, Leadership Development, and various academic enrichment and support programs in Elizabeth, Jersey City, Mercer County, Newark and Paterson, New Jersey, from 1982 - 2004. The bulk of the collection consists of annual reports and includes monthly reports and general administrative files.
