Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey Records
About this Collection
The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey (H.B.A.-N.J.) was founded in 1980 (formerly The Puerto Rican Bar Association) to represent the voice of Hispanic lawyers, foster a more diverse legal landscape, and to help address issues affecting the Hispanic community and Hispanics within the legal profession. Margarita Echevarria helped to found the organization and served as the group’s first president. In cooperation with other Hispanic bar organizations nationwide, the Hispanic community, business, civic, charitable, cultural, and other legal organizations, the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey was, and continues to be, engaged in outreach that offers grants for Hispanic students who attend law school, holding fundraising events, and raising awareness of Hispanics in the legal profession.
The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey Records consists of documents from the early organization of the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey, correspondence to legislators advocating for the appointment of Hispanic judges, American Bar Association plan for developing a successful minority counsel program, Hispanic National Bar Association Newsletter, scholarship dinner dance, records from the H.B.A.-N.J. board of directors meetings, outreach activities, and documents related to several task forces for minorities.
