About this Collection

Community activist, LGBT advocate, educator, social worker, and Rutgers professor. Co-founder of both the Experimental Master of Social Work for Bilingual/ Bicultural Hispanics and of the Master in Public Administration for Hispanic Administrators at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Dr. Hidalgo also co-founded ASPIRA, Inc. of New Jersey, La Casa de Don Pedro, the Puerto Rican Congress of New Jersey, the United Community Corp., and the Newark Urban League. She also served as the Chair of the first Puerto Rican Convention of New Jersey and the Secretary of the first Black and Puerto Rican Convention in Newark, New Jersey.

There are also buttons that reflect Dr. Hidalgo’s sense of humor, social issues she was passionate about, and even musicians who she enjoyed, like Bob Marley. A copy of her dissertation, "Ay Bendito," is available in the Amilkar Velez-Lopez Papers. Dr. Hidalgo was a columnist for the Information newspaper published by the City of Newark.
